The Striped Tigers

African Instrument

Picture
My instrument is a bell, it is from Africa and it was made in the 18th century. This type of bell was identified by its four sided, flat topped shape, was once placed on an ancestral altar in the royal palace. Its shape is thought to resemble the palace roof turrets. Benin Kingdom warriors wore smaller versions of these bells on their chests, as can be seen on the plaques that formerly covered the piers in the palace courtyard. The sound of the bell identified Benin  Kingdom warriors in battle, served as a sign of the spiritual protection of the king and spread terror among the enemy. Last but not least it is made out of copper, alloy and iron. The cultural symbols on this instrument is a lion, leaves, ropes around the sides and vines.

My Instrument And My African Instrument

My instrument and my African instrument are the same because they both make a sound. Such as my instrument makes three different sound a high, low and a medium sound. The African instrument only makes one sound and it is a high pitched sound because it is a bell. Also they are the same because they both have a one way to hold it, my drum you stand it up and the African instrument there is a handle to hold it. Last but not least they both have symbols on it that represent a meaning, my creation has symbols that represent Portugal. The African instrument has symbols that represent the warriors to get ready for battle. That is how my instrument and my African instrument are the same. My African instrument and my instrument are different because my creation can play three different sounds and my African instrument can play only one. Second because they both have a different size, my instrument is big and my African instrument is small, like a pyramid. Finally they both have symbols that mean something different. That is how my instrument and my African instrument are different.

My Unfinshed Instrument

This my instrument I made, it has three different drums that make different sounds. I got the idea by thinking of bongos.  Everyone put symbols on there instruments that represent  there culture. My culture is Portuguese so I put symbols such as a soccer ball, a heart and a cross. I put a soccer ball because they play soccer all the time, I put the heart because I love who I am. Finally I put the cross because I go to church every Sunday. By making sound I have to hit it with a drum stick and you can make three different sounds a high, low and a medium sound. Working together with my group was a great experience to now how to get along with each other. The materials that I made out of my instrument  was three different sized buckets, a tube and a tennis ball for the bottom. The challenges that I faced was to pick out dance moves to put in are performance so we asked each other and some of the teachers. Also my group and I had to find a way to listen to each others ideas by saying are ideas one at a time. Finally we had to make up a costume to wear with are performance so we talked about it and realized that we all are American so we wore red, white and blue.

This is my instrument I made it is a drum, that makes three different sounds!
My Final Instrument
The cultural meaning in the decorative elements that I chose for my instrument was heritage so I am Portuguese and I put symbols that represent Portugal. Such as a soccer ball, a cross and a heart because they play soccer a lot, they go to church every Sunday and I love who I am. Also I did symbols that represented American such as an eagle, stars and the statue of liberty because that is the symbols that represent freedom. I chose these symbols because I am Portuguese and American.

About Me!!

Everyone in my family always have a good time at the festivals we dance, play games and we eat all different kinds of food. In are group the Striped Tigers we picked heritage so I am Portuguese and on my instrument I put Portuguese symbols. Like a soccer ball and a heart. But also I am American so on my instrument I put the American flag, the statue of liberty and stars to represent freedom in our city!

My Groups Performance

My groups performance was so cool because we were so together that you could not even hear are individual part and that was the best part. Because we have to be together to sound like one person is playing. Second we all remembered are rhythm and we did not miss up on any of are rhythms. Last but not least we remembered all of are moves in are performance because we practiced all the time such as at recess or on are free time.
This experience was so exciting because we had to work together and we had to find a way to get along with each other. Second we had to listen to are groups thinking by take turns so it would be fair. But everyone learned so much, this experience had music, art, social studies, writing and library in it. That is a lot of subjects and we get a grade for every one so we have to do are best and we are getting a grade for this website too! We learned how to use computers better, how to write and make rhythms and to make the instruments as well. They were the most hard thing to make because you need a lot of materials. Such as for my instrument I needed three different sized buckets and I added a pole through all of them. But that is not all that you have to do you also have to put symbols on it that represent your culture. Like my culture is Portuguese and American so I had to put symbols that represent that. I put symbols like a soccer ball, a heart and a cross!

My Cultural Vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments and the traditions important to my creation.

Would you believe my creation is a functioning musical instrument as well as a cultural artifact? First of all, my instrument is a musical instrument because it can make three different sounds, for example high, low and medium pitch. You make these sounds by hitting the drum with a drum stick. Even more interesting is that the drum can be played while moving just by holding the top. Last of all my instrument is a cultural artifact because it is man made and it has a meaning to the artifact. It is heritage; my heritage because am is Portuguese. Finally it has symbols on it such as a soccer ball because in Portugal that is there main sport. There is also a cross on my creation because every Sunday in Portugal people go to church.

Amazingly when I was comparing my instrument to my African instrument I was surprised to see the differences and the similarities. My African bell and my instrument are different because my instrument can play three different sounds and the African instrument can only play one sound. Adding to that, they have a different reason to use the instrument. My instrument is played for a Carnival or a celebration and the African bell is used to tell the warriors it is time for a battle. The last example that stands out is they both have a different size. The African instrument is small and my instrument is big. That is how my instrument is different from my African instrument. My African instrument and my instrument are the same because they both have decoration that have a meaning to it, like how I have decorations and symbols that represent Portugal and American. Both instruments make sounds. Lastly they both have some way to hold the instrument. My instrument you stand up and hold it by the front and the African instrument there is a handle to hold it. That is how both my instrument and my African instrument are the same.

My instrument can be used as part of my cultural experience because people would go to the Carnival once a year for a week as a tradition to hear us play our instruments. You can go any day that week, in the month of June. The significant meaning for my tradition, the Carnival is for people to have fun and enjoy the rides or hanging out with your friends. It is a place to get together and have fun, especially it is a place to eat and see entertainment. That is the significant meaning for my tradition. The food at the Carnival would by popcorn and cotton candy, usually junk food or candy, but sometimes they have hot dogs and hand burgers. Our whole group wears shorts, a white T shirt and red, white and blue bracelets. Also we painted each others faces so each of us has lines under are eyes. Last, the girls in my group put black bows in there hair.

So, it is clear to see that this report has given you information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments and the traditions important to my creation.
