The Striped Tigers

My African Instrument

Picture
My instrument is a Nganga a Nigerian bell . When it was made is 19th early 20th century. It is for when they would go hunting for food and when one person would find a animal they would call there people. Plus it is used for when someone dies. What is symbols are on the interment is a man sitting on top of it, a circle in the middle and twisty lines with squares inside of them. Last my personal reflection is that is it is a cool instrument because it was used a long time ago and it was used for hunting plus how they carved everything and how they got it on their like the person on top of it.

My Undecorated Instrument

What my instrument is a recorder how its played is you blow into it and and you put your fingers on the different holes which makes different sounds. The materials that I used to make my instrument is pvc pipe and a piece of wood. The process of building it and the challenges I face is that it did not take that long it did take about 20mins to build it. How I build it is I had to cut a piece of pvc pipe next I had to cut a little cut in it for the air to come out then put the piece of wood inside of it after that for the final finishing piece of the project I had to drill holes inside of it to make different sounds and I was finished. What was the challenging parts of it is when I had to put the wood in because the pipe was to small so the wood would not go in. One more thing is when I was making the holes I had to make the right size to make the right sound.

My Finished Instrument

The symbols that I chose for my instrument is American flag, french flag, soccer ball, dog and a fleur-de-lis. The cultural heritage that my symbols came under is the American flag, french flag, soccer ball and the fleur-de-lis came under common cultural values. Then the dog cameout of religion. Why they come from that category because I am French. and American because everyone in my group is that heritage too. The other symbols because the soccer ball is a famous sport there fleur-de-lis is the symbol of France and the dog because the like to take care of animals there.

What I had to do in my individual part in the group performance is every one would do the intro then my mini group would play then we would go back and the other mini group would play. After that my mini group would play again then we would all play and go down and we would be done.

My cultural vibrations report.

My cultural vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument the recorder. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments and the traditions important to my culture.

Can you imagine using pack tubing and a piece of wood to create a working wind instrument that’s also a cultural artifact? It is a musical instrument because it makes the sound of different notes. my interment is loud and easy to play. In addition to being a musical instrument it is also a cultural artifact. It is a cultural artifact because it is man made and used during the cultural time period of 2011 I have also included specific information about the decoration’s I chose. The decorations I used a based on my culture which is French. For example I put the French flag on it because that is my heritage. There is also a soccer ball because it is a famous sport that French people like to play. Besides that I also included a picture of dog because people living in France like to take care of all animals. Along with that I also put an American flag on my instrument because everyone in my group is from that heritage too. Finally is the fleur-de-lis because it is the symbol of France.

There are many similarities between my instrument, the recorder and my African instrument the nganga. For example they both are instruments that can make music. They both are loud and make a high pitched sound. The differences between the instruments are that they both make different sounds. They have different designs and are not played the same way.

My Recorder can be used as part of my cultural experience because it relates to my cultural theme of heritage. For example there are certain things that relate to traditions imagine the Striped Tigers playing at the Oakland Beach Carnival. People attended this carnival for one week in the summer. They go to hangout with friends and have fun. Another tradition is to have a feast, you can have a nice meal and spend time with your friends and family.

In conclusion I hope you have learned about my instruments culture and design. I also hope you enjoyed learning the differences and similarities between my creation and the African ngana.
